-> it just occured to me that in the Wordpress admin panel, under Options > Discussions, the box for “Attempt to notify any Weblogs linked to from the article (slows down posting.)” was checked off. This is somehow different from pings in that it attempt to notify any sites that you may have linked to in your post. Therefore, the more links the slower it is to post.
