i'm not too experienced at using Ubuntufax, but i would imagine you need both a POTS line and a modem.

as for whether or not it is being actively maintained, i would assume you could still keep the Ubuntu OS updated and secured even though the Fax component isn't being maintained.

also, i would check out Hylafax - they are claiming to be: "The world's most advanced open source fax server". Could be a viable alternative.

really curious about Ubuntufax. im thinking that although i would love to have this piece over ip it sounds like with all the asterix servers out there that are capable the quality of the fax just isnt there.

this is a newbie question relative to faxing. if i go with Ubuntufax i need a modem and a POTS line from my telco dedicated to fax...right?

Thanks in advance

the easiest way i can think of to share files and printer would be to:
1. get a router with network print sharing ability (with a connection via parallel port, usb, or RJ45/ethernet)
2. get an external harddrive with network sharing capability (with a connection via RJ45/ethernet)

that would give you a portable, platform independent solution but you may have to buy these items.

the other way to do it using only open source softwares:
1. install a Linux based file server running SAMBA server (file sharing for Linux/Mac/Win)
2. install your printer on the SAMBA server itself, or on an machine that is connected to the local network and also has file and printer sharing turned on.

this solution is a bit more complex, but might be cheaper to set up.

my friend, I use windows, just because most of software you can find easily with windows.
outlook, emails and other office work run fine with windows. and all i use is not licened(ops) so i did not pay it.
I like to go linux, but linux is really tough to learn and need a lot to configure and run.

i used to run Simply Accounting on a Win2k machine shared with other PC's..

what i did was install from the Win2k machine onto a shared / network drive (this happened to be a linux machine running SAMBA) and then i could access this install from the other PC's on the network as well.

it didn't always work perfectly, and sometimes the other PC's would just decide to not be able to open Simply Accounting off the network. Other times, the data would get all corrupted and i would eventually have to restore from backups.

so, make a ton of backups if go this route.

you could also, maybe, set up the stand alone PC with Windows Advanced Server and use Terminal Services clients on all the other PC's to connect to the main server and access FOXPRO. The server would need to be configured so that each PC that tried to connect had an account on the server as well.

that's just off the top of my head..
haven't had to work with a single Windows machine or software in about 2 years. Go Linux!
